In my landscape process, visual environmental thinking; the harsh and aesthetic beauty, the influence of nature, responsibility, sensitivity, meaning, and the human being come together.
I strive to find a natural way to express something about the surrounding reality and human existence that I can only reach through art.
In the exhibition at Galleria Joella, I present the poetic flow of the landscape. I feel that the spontaneous freedom of painting aligns harmoniously with the slow and lingering progress of printmaking.
Sense of Place
I live and work in the landscapes of waters; at the intersection of the Bothnian Bay, the Kemijoki River, and the river delta, and this location undoubtedly influences my art. Nature and the environment are constantly present, both in the good and the bad, in everyday existence. The conditions of existence are affected by the simultaneously beneficial positive effects of nature, and, at the same time, when the gaze turns, the energy of environmental concerns becomes visible. Nature and landscape bring cumulative good on their own. But at the same time, Finnish well-being requires the raw materials and conditions provided by the Meri-Lappi location and the northern nature to serve as the capacity for industry, where nature and the environment are inevitably shaped according to the demands of industry. In the exhibition, the poetic flow of the landscape reveals the purifying sensitivity of nature and the landscape.
Relationship with Nature
My work is based on a local and personal experience of place/space and its reinterpretation. Place has always been a significant starting point for my artistic process. Places and experiences of place are meeting points and incubators for thoughts that bring about changes in the nature of my artistic work. In a place, there is the presence of time, which is always in motion, and space, which is formed by existence and its moments. Both are present at the same time. From the works in this exhibition, one can sense that I have been immersed in a free, vast, and flowing experience of place. Occasionally, a journey or path brings a collective experience of place to encounter. The shared experience of place is formed through the imagery of local water landscapes, the roaring waterfall of the Lofoten Islands, the heavy steps through a familiar sinking bog, the century-old growth in the protected ruins of the Nymph Garden, and the sense of freedom in breathing at the summit of Lapland’s fells.
About Art
In printmaking, I am excited by its slow devotion. Along with nature and place, the imagery of my works includes drops, lines, light, sound, earth, air, water, and the abundance of colors. The marks of drawing lead into the landscape imagery, and the laborious roughness of mezzotint connects with lived moments, the landscape, and the forms of water. The ink and pen strokes in the paintings reveal the movement of expression and the layers of shades. I sense that I reach parts of the spirit of the place and bring them to presence through my own experience. Occasionally, I find something ancient and eternal. My experience is always in motion, and its permanence is transient. The landscape flows like water and is forever in motion.
