Maria Kaisto’s exhibition explores the concept of the periphery – the marginal – through the means of expressionist oil painting.
The concept can scale to signify a place geographically, physically, or mentally. The works in the exhibition reflect Kaisto’s own growth environment, formed by concrete apartment buildings, polar night, snow melting into thickets, plastic floors, her little sister’s kohl eyeliner, and heavy rock blaring too loud. From these elements, Kaisto creates a powerful visual whole that opens up perspectives on the feeling of being an outsider. At the same time, it processes the experience that a person – regardless of their will – is a product of their surroundings.
Periferia consists of oil paintings on hard surfaces such as acrylic glass and aluminum. This allows the texture of the paint to rise to the surface. For Kaisto, the materiality of the painting and the handmade nature of the object are essential. Even in a world of quickly snapped mobile photos, she continues to trust painting as a visual art form that holds within it the information and emotion of countless hours of labor.
