MAIJA ALBRECHT, MIKAEL KIHLMAN, LIINA MÄKI-PATOLA JA LARS NYBERG: SHARP OBSERVATIONS 13.11.-7.12.2025

The artist draws on a gleaming copper plate with a sharp diamond or steel needle. The grooves of the drawing are filled with printing ink, and the image is transferred from the copper to the printing paper through a press. This is how a drypoint print is born.
Drypoint is the most direct of all intaglio techniques. Yet it demands sensitivity, skill, and practice from its maker. The act of drawing is delicate and meditative. In the concentrated physicality of drawing, presence and touch are emphasized. It forces the artist to proceed slowly. The needle moves across the copper surface, and the artist feels the resistance of the metal. Only through experience is it possible to anticipate the tones of the finished image, for drawing is a blind process. The fine line scratched into the plate is different from the one that appears on paper, and only when the artist lifts the print from the press can they be certain of the result.
Maija Albrecht wished to invite three colleagues to join her in this exhibition—artists whose working methods she feels share affinities with her own. Their works are connected by their small scale and quiet expression, which, in its mystery, does not seek to proclaim anything. Instead, it offers hints that subtle tones, small details, and the interpretive openness of an image may hold a deeper meaning.
