Laura Pietiläinen: Tears

Laura Pietiläinen: Tears 14.12.2023-14.1.2024

The “Tears” exhibition explores emotional states and conflicting feelings. It delves into inner turmoil and hidden tears. In Finnish, the title can mean both “tears” (as in crying) and “tears” (as in rips or ruptures).

The works feature fleshy and organic tissues that stretch and tear at their seams. The paintings, with their gentle colors, invite the viewer to take a closer look—even if the initial reaction might be one of discomfort due to the raw imagery. Nevertheless, my goal is to create beauty within the paintings and to awaken the viewer to the fascinating nature of the human body.

In the details, the harmony created by pastel and water-soluble oil paints encourages observation from different distances. The human body is a fascinating and complex organism, with every part serving its own purpose. Internal organs, with their structures and color tones, are beautiful and delicate—qualities I strive to highlight in the paintings. I’m also drawn to painterly elements such as translucent surfaces, fluids, and membrane-like textures.
