Synchronicity showcases seven contemporary artists who reflect the vast and vibrant interconnected printmaking community across the United States. These select artists demonstrate expertise in traditional print processes including relief, lithography, and serigraphy, often utilizing innovative approaches through materials and techniques. Featured artists include Jeffery Dell, Yoonmi Nam, Kathleen Neeley, Ryan O’Malley, Andrew Polk, Kathryn Polk and Cassie Normandy White.
This exhibition is part of a wider exchange between print communities in Finland and the US. An exhibition of Finnish artists was featured in February of 2022 during the annual PrintAustin festival in Austin, TX, and will travel to the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi as part of the Oso Bay Biennial in October.
This exhibition has a serendipitous backstory. Artists Cassie Normandy White and Minna Lappalainen met at Galleria Joella in October of 2019 as White travelled to Turku with her parents to seek last resort medical care for her mother, who was suffering from debilitating pain.
After a year of doctors saying her condition was untreatable, online research led White to Dr. Orava, an expert in the specialized surgery her mother needed, giving her a renewed sense of hope. The night the family arrived, they took a short walk from their hotel and were delighted to come across Galleria Joella. White’s parents insisted she visit the next day, as she was interested in learning about Finnish printmakers.
White and Lappalainen had a wonderful conversation, exchanged contact information, and planned an exhibition exchange during the uncertainty of the pandemic through countless emails and Zoom meetings. Thanks to the hard work of Lappalainen, they were able to secure funding to make this exchange possible and showcase the dynamic works of printmakers between our respective countries.
