I explored these themes from different perspectives in my earlier works in two museum exhibitions in the 1990s. Now, years later, I wanted to return to this subject as seen and experienced by my older self. What kinds of visual memories rise from within me? For me, memories are multisensory: scents, light, sounds, touch\u2026 Memories can be deeply restorative.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"777\">During the working process, I return to a small moment experienced long ago, and the memory takes on a visual form.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"969\">Words and sentences have long been an essential part of my artistic practice; I write them down, attach them to the walls of my studio, and sometimes also add them to my paintings by sewing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1199\"><em data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"998\">the water breathes slowly<\/em><br data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1001\" \/><em data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1031\">the bird sings the landscape<\/em><br data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1034\" \/><em data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1060\">in my house a tree grows<\/em><br data-start=\"1060\" data-end=\"1063\" \/><em data-start=\"1063\" data-end=\"1094\">to the fish I tell everything<\/em><br data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1097\" \/><em data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1128\">autumn walks against the wind<\/em><br data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1131\" \/><em data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1167\">the sky flows through the mountain<\/em><br data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1170\" \/><em data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1199\">I am my mother\u2019s flowerbed\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1222\"><strong data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1222\">About the artist:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1622\">Arja Valkonen-Goldblatt (b. 1950, Kuopio) has worked as a full-time visual artist since 1975, using a wide range of techniques including painting, installations, artist\u2019s books, and most recently ceramics. She has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Valkonen-Goldblatt lives in Turku.
