After she passed away, it turned out she had left behind so much fabric that my mother used it to make towels for her own grandchildren as well. As a legacy from Grandma, we now have a lifetime supply of beautiful towels in stripes and checks.<\/em><\/p>\n

The works in this exhibition are rooted in the everyday and in objects: ryijy rugs, woven cloths, fabrics, linens. Handmade items, handicrafts, women\u2019s work. I reflect on the traces left by past generations – lessons, wisdom, attitudes, and perspectives on life. Care and nurture, but also stains and tears, secrets and silences. Stories told so many times they become true.<\/p>\n

At the same time, I wonder what will be left of me, of us, for the generations to come.<\/p>\n

As a maker, I am deeply connected to a lineage of artisans. I enjoy the immediacy of painting and drawing, and the slowness of time they demand. The moment of making and the trace of the hand\u2014both my own and those of generations past are important. I paint not only my own history, but also themes that span generations and speak to our shared humanity, in an attempt to touch upon collective memory.<\/p>\n

Hanna R\u00e4ty (b. 1970) lives and works in Juva, at the old Vehmaa school building. She graduated from the Turku Arts Academy (BA in Fine Arts) in 2021 and the Free Art School in 1993. R\u00e4ty works mainly through painting and drawing and often constructs spatial installations from her works.<\/p>\n
